As chief dental officer, Dr. H. Robert Steiman heads recruitment for UnifiedSmiles throughout Michigan. His dedication to dentistry is evident in his 41 years of service with the School of Dentistry at the University of Detroit Mercy. He was dean from 2000 to 2008 and guided the University through strategic planning, a successful accreditation review and the move to its current location. In 2008, the University named Dr. Steiman Dean Emeritus, School of Dentistry in honor of his of excellence, leadership and innovation. He is only the second dean of the School of Dentistry to be honored with this title.
Dr. Steiman joined the School of Dentistry in 1967 as a faculty member in the Department of Physiology. He subsequently served as Director of Basic Sciences. Following completion of his residency program in endodontics he joined the Department of Endodontics. For 21 years, Dr. Steiman served as the chairman and director of the advanced education program in endodontics. Dr. Steiman earned his doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Detroit, a doctor of philosophy in physiology and a Master of Science from Wayne State University School of Medicine, and a Master of Science in Dentistry and a Certificate in Endodontics from Indiana University. He has lectured internationally and has been published in numerous journals including the Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Pediatric Dentistry and The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association.
His professional honors include Fellow, American College of Dentists; Alumnus of the Year, University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry; Fellow, Pierre Fauchard Academy; Fellow, International College of Dentists, and Fellow, American College of Stomatologic Surgeons.
